QUOTE OF THE WEEK
In honor of the Cardinals’ thrilling playoff run, here’s one from Hall of Famer and native St. Louisan Yogi Berra:
“You can observe a lot just by watching.”
This quote couldn’t have come at a better time, since I just got back from my fall photo session to capture all the magnificent colors before they fade. Now more than ever, I have to be on the lookout for inspiration since I can’t afford to have a shortage of ideas to paint. This morning’s bike ride was not planned, but I was outside taking a photo of the painting below and noticed the trees glowing. So, one hour and probably one hundred pics later, I’m back in my studio to share my thoughts. I highly recommend finding 30 minutes during the day this week to walk around outside and enjoy the colors. Perhaps wake up a little early or skip Pinterest during lunch to take a stroll. Even better if you can make it to Forest Park to see the fire red trees flanking the art museum. (For my friends in Arizona, sorry to rub it in that we have a beautiful fall season. But I guess you’re still having pool parties, so we’re even.)
FOOD TRUCK FRIDAY
Last Friday I attended the final Food Truck Friday of the season in Tower Grove Park. As the name implies, the event was a gathering of over 20 trucks and microbreweries and occurred on the second Friday of each month since May. I kept procrastinating, so having one last chance to see what it was all about was a great incentive. I walked the entire line, reading chalkboard menus, laughing at some of the clever names, and rejoicing that I went early enough to avoid the lines. I was most enticed by Hot Aztec’s menu, specifically the diablo shrimp and chicken mole tacos. Both were tasty and filling, though the spicy shrimp had a bit more flavor and the guacamole was a perfect topping. And of course I had to follow up the savory tacos with dessert, and chose The Sweet Divine truck over a handful of others with tempting sweets. Click on the link and scroll down to the menu. Can you guess which one I tried? Apparently the “Drunken Pig” won the Cupcake Wars competition on Food Network, so I figured I’d throw caution to the wind and try a pastry with beer, sharp cheddar cheese, and bacon! As expected, the bakers know what they’re doing and the mix of flavors was incredible.
Before my food coma set in, I was able to knock out this watercolor sketch of the two-man band entertaining the picnickers. Very cool sound, played some originals and covers such as Johnny Cash. I left out the trees in the background to keep the composition to primary colors.
