QUOTE OF THE WEEK

FEATURED ARTWORK / SNEAK PEEK
Since I began developing my watercolors, I’ve been looking for a way to incorporate my drawing skills, more than just the typical light sketch that starts off almost every watercolor painting. The past few weeks has been full of testing different papers and surfaces that can take splashes of watercolor without warping, but also hold many layers of graphite pencil. Some subjects and compositions just need a little extra boost of personality and I think the splash of color is a logical solution.
The Taste of St. Louis exhibit at the end of this month will also be the public’s first glance at a line of public safety art I’m working on (police, firefighters, etc.) that will incorporate my traditional drawing skills with a splash of color. I’ll be creating a variety of originals and prints, from pure black/white to intense color (i.e. flames), and many will have an element of customization, such as a badge number. Here’s a sneak peek at a piece I just completed based on an amazing photograph taken by Patrick Lanham (website). Just incredible what he can capture! Patrick has generously granted me permission to use some of his work as reference and inspiration since it is such a specialized genre. I did two versions, one on drawing paper without color (not pictured), and this second one on cold-press watercolor paper that has a bit more texture. More to come, and there will definitely be more to see at the show!
